Russia makes subtle entrance to Africa while Washington busy with wars

Russia’s Dmitry Medvedev started his visit to Africa on June 24. Medvedev will travel to Nigeria, Namibia and Angola. Moscow is ready to help the African countries in the development of their natural resources – oil, gas and uranium – despite the economic crisis.

Russia does not conceal its strategic interests in Africa. The black continent can indeed become a new perspective and attractive market if armed conflicts reduce in number there.

Russian navy ready to use force against Somali pirates

Russia’s navy says it is ready to intervene at any time in the case of four Russians being held hostage by Somali pirates. Negotiations are reportedly underway to secure the release of the four Russian and five Filipino sailors captured in Somalia last week. The pirates are believed to be demanding over one million dollars in ransom.
Pirates target easy prey – big cargo ships owned by European companies. In just three days a Dutch, a Turkish and a German vessel have been captured off the Somali coast.
