Castro says new Russian cathedral an honor for Havana

Posted by Kris Roman on October 23, 2008

Former Cuban leader Fidel Castro called the newly-built Russian Orthodox cathedral, which opened in Havana on Sunday, “an honor” for the Caribbean island.

The five-domed Our Lady of Kazan cathedral, which took four years to construct in the historic center of the Cuban capital, was consecrated by the Russian church’s top foreign official, Metropolitan Kirill and attended by the country’s President Raul Castro.

The retired Cuban leader, who approved the construction project while president, said “Our capital is honored with the presence of a Temple worthy of the prestigious Russian Orthodox Church.”

During the construction, soil from the graves of Soviet soldiers who perished in Cubawas brought to the site.

The church opening also coincided with a Russian cultural festival in Latin America, due to run until November 17, featuring concerts by Russian musicians, as well as Russian films and documentaries.

The Russian Orthodox Church honored Fidel and his brother Raul, who took over the reins in February, for their contributions to the cathedral’s construction.

In his article, Fidel wrote about the Russian Orthodox Church: “It is a spiritual force. It played a major role at critical times in the history of Russia.”
