Russia backs the idea of establishing a Caspian economic cooperation organization to oversee the littoral states’ joint projects in energy, transportation and trade, a Russian first deputy prime minister said on Friday.
“Russia supports this initiative,” Viktor Zubkov said, speaking at an economic conference of the Caspian states – Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Russia and Turkmenistan – in the Russian city of Astrakhan, where the initiative was put forward.

Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov said that Caspian Sea countries should avoid negativism regarding the present circumstance since no new legal status has been issued concerning the Caspian Sea.
Speaking at the meeting of ministers of foreign affairs in Caspian Sea Countries in Tehran, Lavrov said that one of the main concerns of Caspian Sea nation was the issue of legal status.
“Since no new legal status has been issued, we must not give into negativism regarding the present circumstances,” he said.
